Through the researches on the development of high-strength poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was found that the irradiation of carbon dioxide laser to the spinning line at the position immediately below the spinneret and the use of the spinneret of small diameter for the preparation of undrawn yarn leads to the increases in the strength and toughness of the resultant PET fibers after applying the drawing and annealing processes. Additivity of the effects of the two types of spinning modification was also confirmed. Possible mechanism for such improvements in mechanical properties was investigated through the numerical analysis combining the coarse molecular dynamics simulation for the analysis of the state of molecular entanglement and the macroscopic numerical simulation of the melt spinning behavior. In addition, the same concept was applied for the development of the high-strength fibers of poly(butylene terephthalate) and poly(ethylene naphthalate), which have different molecular flexibility in comparison with PET.
